28 Weeks 4 Days: Baby B Has Hiccups!

At 28 weeks and 4 days, I had a peculiar feeling in my tummy for about 7 or 8 minutes.

I had felt it before but couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Basically, it felt like I had a throbbing pulse in my tummy, quite low down, way past my belly button, actually, more in my bum to be precise!

It was a reoccurring feeling of pulsations, in an ongoing pattern which lasted for between 3-6 minutes.

It felt really odd, I assumed at first it was the baby kicking, but it was too gentle for a kick and also it was in exactly the same spot time after time.

I had ignored it on the previous occasions I felt it but this time I was a little weirded out so decided to google it.

I didn't really know WHAT to google, so I actually typed the words ' Pregnant and have a weird pulsing in my bum'' (Yes, really...)  and guess what?

It turns out it is the baby hiccupping! How I hadn't thought that this could be the explanation  I have no idea, but there it was, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense!

Baby B had bloomin’ hiccups!

It was Soooooooo sweet and made me feel extremely close to my little one, imagining them hiccupping away!

28 Weeks Pregnant & Baby Is Transverse

So Today I am 28 weeks and 3 days preggo and I had another midwife appointment.

I’ve been feeling extremely uncomfortable for about week now and was looking forward to speaking to the midwife to see if this was normal at this stage.

During my examination where she feels the baby, measures my bump and listens to the heartbeat, I made the mistake of asking what position my little on is in. Turns out part of the reason for my discomfort is that Baby B is currently Transverse.

Cheers Baby!

Basically, it is laying across my tummy horizontally rather than head down, vertically. I have a head in one hip and a bum in another! GAH!

I was pleased as at least I knew my why the sides of my bump felt so uncomfortable, but felt mildly panicked as if the baby stays in this position, I won’t be able to give birth naturally, which terrifies me.

I was re-assured baby still has plenty of time to turn, so I’ll try and stay optimistic and hope that baby gets a wriggle on and moves out of my hips!

Sleep? What’s that?

So, pregnancy, I have a bone to pick with you.

I was under the impression that sleepless nights only came ONCE the baby had arrived. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that I didn’t sign up for sleepless nights just yet. So why do you plague me with them so?!

Sleep Issue 1: OK so firstly, I have to pee like, every 90 minutes. It’s pretty much clock work now. I know that If I go to bed at 10:30, I’ll be up at 12pm, 1:30, 3pm, 4:30 and then 6pm, just before my alarm goes. It’s not fun, but that on its own would be somewhat manageable, it’s all the other stuff too which makes sleeping so much harder!

Sleep Issue 2: The thirst. I realise that this could possibly be a contributing factor to Sleep Issue 1, but after various tests I have concluded that it matters not if I drink a thimble of water prior to going to bed or a litre of the stuff, the 90 minute rule will still apply. That said, why is it that I can make it through the day on a relatively normal quota of liquid, but by the time I lay my head to rest in bed, I’m suddenly possessed by a thirst demon that demands I drink my weight in water before I’m allowed to close my eyes? I find this just plain weird.

Sleep Issue 3.  I am hot. ALL the time. I’ve been sleeping in a sheet since about week 12 and it’s now November and I’m still in a sheet, terrified of the sweats that will inevitably overcome me should I dare to snuggle into a duvet. Even with just a sheet I’ve been knows to wake with a clammy neck, its grim. Aaah Duvet, you are banned from my side of the bed for the foreseeable, and I’m missing you so much!

Sleep Issue 4. Then there’s the sleeping on your side thing. For a (former) tummy sleeper like me, this is so un-natural and uncomfortable! If it wasn’t for the waking every 90 minutes to pee, I’d be awake having to turn onto my other said to remedy my dead leg, torso and arm, which is completely floppy from where I’ve been leaning on it. Joy.

Sleep Issue 4: Dreams. Oh the pregnancy dreams, they are pretty damn vivid and I’ve actually managed to wake myself up on more than 1 occasion because I’ve been talking so loudly, out loud to myself. (My poor hubby!)

So Pregnancy, a little heads up would have been great is all I’m trying to say, given that I had plans of storing up as much sleep as possible ahead of Baby B’s arrival!

And if one more persons utters the words ‘It’s your body’s way of getting you ready for the sleepless nights when your baby comes’, I won’t be held accountable for my sleep deprived actions!

Does any of this ring a bell with anyone else, or is it just me?!

Bump Pic! 27 Weeks 6 Days!

This week has proved itself to be really boring and un-eventful.

I'm feeling quite big now, heavy and tired so work is beginning to become a drag, ESPECIALLY the commute!

Maternity leave still feels like its a long way off (I'll be 34 weeks when I go) and I sometimes find myself wondering how on earth I'm going to keep going until then!

Indeed, I felt so uncomfortable on Sunday evening, that despite being sat around in my PJ's and it being about 9pm in the evening, I drove around to my parents house.

I really wanted a cuddle and was feeling emotional. They only live around the corner so it's not like I had far to go, I just wanted a hug!

Heartburn is really starting to blight my life at the moment, nothing that I do seems to help and I'm spending a fortune on Gaviscon, which is revolting!

I'm thinking about speaking to my GP to ask if there is anything stronger than Gaviscvon that I can take to help ease the pain, maybe then I'd feel a bit more comfortable.

Bump Pic! 23 Weeks 3 Days!

I'm on holiday in Cyprus AND Mr B felt baby B move for the first time this week!

Just as our plane landed in Paphos I felt him/her kicking so grabbed his hand quickly and placed it firmly on my tum. He hadn't been able to feel anything before but he definitely did this time!

It absolutely made my day that could finally feel him/her too!

The baby's movements continued all week too- I don't know if it was because It was the first time in weeks I'd spent a decent amount of time laying down and relaxing, but every time I lay down he/she would wriggle and kick me!

By mid week I actually managed to catch on video, about 20 seconds worth of movement- just tiny little ripples of my tummy, but it was amazing and made me smile!

It was lovely just to take time out the two of us (well, three of us if count spud!) and I really tried to make the most of it, given that it will be our last holiday together as a couple for some time!

My Battle with Hormonal Cystic Acne In Pregnancy

One of the things I had most looked forward to when becoming pregnant was the ‘glowing skin’ I was told that pregnant women get.

During the time I came off my pill, I suffered terribly with hormonal cystic acne and needed to go onto antibiotics, which I came off when I found out I was pregnant, but by which time my skin had vastly improved.

I got my first real bout of bad, hormonal cystic acne again at around 12 weeks, and it lasted for about 3 weeks.

Luckily I was at home, sick as a dog with my morning sickness, so having to go out and face the world wasn't an issue, and I just hid away and tried to not aggravate my skin as much as possible.

By the time I got to 18 weeks it had come back with a vengeance. I’m talking, 7-8 large, sore, extremely painful under the skin cystic lumps and bumps, all over my chin. But only on my chin.

I tried, everything!

This was me on a relatively good day by the way...

I looked at my diet and upped my fruit intake and spent weeks blending spinach, avocado and fruits into smoothies to help and feed and repair my skin.

I tried eating a more alkaline diet as heard that may help.

I tried bathing my skin in Pink Himalayan rock salt diluted in warm water

I slapped on savlon, In the hope that its healing properties would clear my skin up.

Nothing worked and eventually I begged my doctor, through streams of tears to prescribe me something, anything that could help!

I had to go to work, but couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror, but was checking my face 100 times a day to see if any new ones had surfaced, I was completely and utterly miserable.

He prescribed me Zineryt, a topical Zinc and Erythromycin lotion that you apply directly onto the area twice a day and is considered safe in pregnancy.

It does say it isn’t a quick fix and can take up to 5 weeks to start working, but I was so happy to just be given something, It didn’t matter.

I used it as stated, twice a day and after about 3 weeks, my skin was so  much better. Yes, for all I know it could have been because whatever hormones were causing the acne had changed, so it went away by itself, or it could have been because of the lotion. I’ll never know.

If you are suffering with terrible acne during your pregnancy, I wholly recommend you speak to your GP, I wish I had sooner, then the weeks I spent it tears feeling like a monster could have been avoided.

I realise that not everyone feels happy about using various forms of medication in pregnancy and its a very personal choice, but for me, the emotional stress of coping with my skin was causing me so much stress and upset, it was a no brainer.

The 20 Week Scan & 20 Week Bump Pic!

It finally arrived, the day for my 20 week scan and I was so excited I barely slept a wink the night before!

I was excited mainly, but also If I'm honest, I was pretty damn nervous too. By this point, the sonographer would be able to see if there were any real physical problems or abnormalities with our baby as they would be looking at EVERYTHING in such depth.

I Tried to put my nerves to one side and just be excited about seeing our baby again and see how much he/she has grown!

We've decided to not find out the gender, despite how much I'm desperate to know (I’m extremely impatient) so we were hoping we wouldn't see anything on the scan or that the sonographer wouldn't accident slip up and reveal the sex!

Baby B, doing his/her best to not get a decent shot!

We needn't have worried, and the scan was incredible.

Our baby looked like a proper baby and I was so shocked to see how much they had grown in just 8 weeks!

The scan was really thorough, they checked the function and positioning of the heart, including looking at the arteries in and out of the heart, they checked the stomach, kidneys, bladder and liver too. They measured the skull, the length of the baby and we even got to see it’s little feet, with it’s perfect toes! It was incredible, and everything looked just fine!

We came away on cloud nine and couldn't stop looking at the photo of our little baby, a photo which took almost as long as the appointment to get! Each time the sonographer tried to get a decent profile shot, the little blighter turned it’s head away!

Guess it’s not a poseur like its mum then!

In other news, bump is still growing nicely and is looking gradually more and more rounded!

18 Weeks Pregnant and I Felt Baby B Move!

I was 18 weeks on Saturday 31st August and on that day, I felt what was definitely Baby B, move for the first time!

It was AMAZING!

I was sat in a BMW garage, talking to a salesman with the hubby about buying a new car, and suddenly I was aware of ‘squggling’ going on in my tummy!

It lasted about 20 seconds and felt like something tickling my tummy, while moving around.

This time I KNEW it wasn’t gas or tummy gurgles, this went on for too long and the movements were so, peculiar, I just knew this was my baby!

I was however, in the middle of a conversation with this stranger so couldn’t just stop and shout ‘Oh my god I can feel my baby!’, so I calmly finished the conversation and once outside, rushed over to my hubby to hell him before calling my mum in excitement to tell her too!

They say you may be able to start to feel your baby from 18-20 week is if it is your first pregnancy and I had been so excited about feeling him/her move and knowing for sure it was them!

This was!

I didn’t feel him/her again until Sunday evening and then it was only a very quick, short movement, but it was just as amazing!

I still can’t believe I’m growing a little person in my tummy, it feels quite amazing.

I’d love to hear about when you first felt your baby move; where were you? What did it feel like?

Mama Mio Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Butter

One of my biggest beauty concerns since becoming pregnant, is the emergence of stretch marks.

While considered by some as being and inevitable side effect of pregnancy, they are still something that I’d like to do my best to avoid!

Don’t get me wrong, I am already home to several slithery, silvery lines across my hips, due to weight gain and loss, but If possible I’d like to get away without having them strewn across my tummy, as although they fade with time, they never go.

Prevention is always better than cure, so with that In mind I started my war against the stretch marks from about week 12, and my weapon of choice? Mama Mio’s Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Butter.

This cream is a decadently rich, non greasy, creamy butter that melts into your skin leaving it feeling incredibly soft and nourished while it’s fresh, slightly citrusy fragrance envelops your senses!

I have been using this twice a day religiously all over my bump and hips and its texture combined with its relaxing and fresh fragrance has on more than one occasion, seen me utter the sound  ‘aaaah’!

The butter helps to strengthen and retain your skins elasticity with the help of Omega 3,6,and 9, and as yet I haven’t seen a single mark emerge!

My one criticism is that it is only available in 120ml tubes- I slather this stuff all over me and would love a big juicy pot of it rather than a relatively small tube.

Mama Mio’s Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Butter costs £23 for 120ml and I think it’s worth its weight in gold!

Cravings!

So, I started off my pregnancy craving Wrigleys Juicy Fruit Gum (from about weeks 8-13), which I didn't feel too bad about as I didn't actually swallow or eat any of it.

This new craving is, however, FAR less waist friendly!

I've developed an insatiable taste for Pizza Express American Pizzas and this started around week 16!

I had 3 last week alone, and nothing else hits the spot quite like that Pizza!

Oh, and the shop bought Pizzas wont do- they have to be the ones made in the restaurants! This baby is proper fussy! Hehe!

Have any of you had any cravings?

Elemis Skin Nourishing Bath Milk

One of the things I look forward to most of an evening, especially now we are coming into winter, is a lovely, warm soak in my bath.

There is no better way of leaving the stresses of the day behind than by sinking into the tub and feeling the warm water soothe your aching limbs and tired mind.

Aaah.

There is nothing better in my opinion.

Except wait, there is actually one thing better than that, and that’s a bath with Elemis’Skin Nourishing Milk.

This award winning product has a rich milk protein base of nourishing vitamins, amino acids and minerals with natural plant collagens that help to feed and nourish the skin while keeping it soft and supple.

Unlike some bubble baths that can be drying on your skin, this milk is extremely gentle and is suitable for sensitive and dry skin, so for me is perfect!

Did I mention it smells amazing? Think really soft, delicate baby powder. Mnnnnnn

This milk is the perfect treat for mums-to-be, soothing tight, itchy skin while you bathe and can even be used neat on dry patches and your bump!

Now, it costs £42 for a lovely big 400ml bottle, which may sound a lot, but it really is so worth the investment, especially if like me, bath time is something you cherish!

Mama Mio Clean Slate Cleanser

Ok so, I am currently still waiting for the glowing skin that they all say comes with being pregnant.

Since the day I found out I was expecting, I was especially excited at the prospect of my glowing and healthy skin. Alas, no doubt due to a little bad luck and to the huge amounts of hormones that are currently surging through my body, this has failed to happen and I am instead, looking a mess.

My skin is as greasy as hell and prone to both small whiteheads and large, sore under the skin cysts.
Lovely!

Thankfully, there is a brand that has come to my skins rescue, Mama Mio, a brand who believe in giving you fit skin for life and their cleanser, Clean Slate has been my best friend now for months!

Clean Slate is a deep cleansing, SLS free, lightly foaming gel that feels like it kisses your skin clean!

It smells beautiful, botanical almost and never, ever leaves your skin feeling tight or dry thanks to its 5 eco-cert cleansers set in organic Aloe leaf juice with pre plus probiotics, firming proteins and moisturising omegas.

I cannot recommend this cleanser more highly!

It doesn't foam up or dry out your skin

It was gentle on my sensitive skin, didn’t dry out or strip my skin of its natural oils and it didn’t irritate my already irritated and sore spots.

The smell was extremely fresh and relaxing and I almost feel like I’m being treated to a mini facial every time I use it!

Now, yes it does cost £22.50 for a 150ml bottle, BUT I have had mine for almost 3 months now and I still haven’t used it all, PLUS I’d have been prepared to pay so much more for a cleanser that actually worked and loved my skin back!

Mama Mio’s Clean Slate is available from their website.

Bump Pic! 15 Weeks 6 Days

So le bump has officially popped, (a little!) !

Yes I do still have moments where I think I just look fat, but I'm starting to feel rather proud of my slightly protruding belly!

I decided that now is the time to start my battle against stretch marks, so I am religiously applying shed loads of moisturiser to my tummy and hips in the morning and evening. (Ok so its not that religiously and I do frequently forget it in the morning, but I'm working on it!)

Aveeno's Moisturising Creamy Oil is one of my favourite go-to products and I highly recommend it!

You can read my review of this little gem HERE.

My First Baby Purchase from Not On The Highstreet

It is so tempting as soon as you get that confirmation that you’re pregnant, to want to go out and buy gorgeous baby stuff. At least it was for me!

I waited patiently until my 12 week scan before I finally gave in and bought my first ever baby item, and I love it!

Say hello to this gorgeous little item from Not On The Highstreet!

For those of you that have never heard of Not On The Highstreet, where have you been! This is by a long way, one of my all time favourite online stores!

It stocks a HUGE range of different items and brands and they stock the most amazing, unusual and unique gifts!

This yummy little body suit is from Simply Colors and is 100% customisable! You can chose the size, the style, if it has long or short sleeves, the colour and the print colour too! You can then have whatever text you want written on it across 3 lines!

As we won’t be finding out the gender of our baby, I went for a very neutral white suit with yellow writing and thought that ‘50% mummy, 50% daddy, 100% cute’ text was just too cute so had to have it!

I thought it was a real bargain too, to have a totally bespoke bodysuit for just £15.50!

Anyway, allow me to suggest you go and take a look at all Not On The Highstreet has to offer. It has TONNES of amazing baby brands on there too, so you (and your baby!) will be spoilt for choice!

Bump Pic! 14 weeks 6 days

Here's my bump at 14 weeks 6 days!

It feels really high and I'm still quite self conscious as feel that I just look fat rather than pregnant at the moment. I'm assured that isn't the case, but still!

I've started to grow out of most of my old clothes so decided to remove all of the snug, offending items from my wardrobe and to instead, replace them with comfier, bigger clothes.

Out of sight they can no longer mock me!

Now I can see a bump, I find myself cradling and holding it rather a lot, none more so then when packed onto a crammed tube!

I have a Baby on Board Badge, which thankfully means that people tend to offer me their seat, but I doubt I need it as I spent so much of my time on the train holding my belly! It must be pretty obvious!

The 12 Week Scan: I Saw My Baby!

I saw my baby again! My amazing little baby that no longer looks like a jelly bean but an actual, teenie tiny little person!

Waiting nervously and excitedly for the sonographer to collect us from the waiting room, I survey the other women waiting to be scanned, all with varying bump sizes, but all with the same excited smiles on their faces.
Walking into the little room I lay down on the chair and look up at the screen in front of me.

Argh I’m going to see my baby again!

A blob of cold gel is put onto my belly, bloated from drinking so much water before the scan and the cold scanning instrument is pushed onto my tummy. (You are asked to drink about a pint and a half at least 20 mins before being scanned)

‘’I’m just going to take a look and then I’ll turn the screen on for you,’’ she says.

That as the longest 15 seconds of my life!

What if they don’t find anything? What is Baby B isn’t ok?

I’m nervous.

After what feels like a lifetime the screen flickers to life and I see our baby.

Our baby is beautiful and bouncing around inside me like I’m some sort of trampoline! He/she has their leg extended in the air the entire time, much to my amusement, and I watch in awe as the sonographer does all the checks she needs to do.

I’m shown my babys heartbeat and told that the nuchal translucency (the collection of fluid behind the babys head which can be an indicator of downs syndrome) is small in measurement (which is good), that all looks as it should and I’m actually 12+4 days pregnant rather than 12+1.

Baby B at 12 weeks 4 days

My due date is now February 1st!

I'm then asked to have some routine blood tests done, Including one to determine the chances of my baby having downs syndrome.

On the way out we book our 16 week appointment with the Midwife and the 20 week scan with the sonographer. It feels like so far away! How am I going to wait another 8 weeks to see my baby again!

Gah this pregnancy malarkey is testing, especially for a super impatient person!

12 Weeks Pregnant and EVERYTHING Smells!

So, I had heard that in pregnancy a women’s sense of smell can change and heighten.

No shit! I can smell EVERYTHING and everything makes me want to vom!

I’ve been driving my hubby mad with this symptom, declaring as I walk into every room of the house that ‘It smells horrendous in here!’, when he claims it doesn't smell at all!

My poor pooch has been somewhat neglected due to my super sense as I cannot bear to get too close to his dog breath or doggy smell.

The fridge just smells horrendous! I have to hold my breath every time I need to get something from it and I swear I can even smell the dirt on our carpet!

One particularly bad day, while laying in bed feeling miserable I caught whiff of a smell that set me off gagging terribly.

What was that smell? Me.

Yep, me. I gingerly lent over to smell my arm and immediately felt myself gagging.

My god I cannot even stand the smell of me! For a few days I actually had to shower several times a day to stop myself from gagging at myself!

This pregnancy malarkey is hard work, and often totally bonkers! Who gags at their own natural smell! Weird.

Anti Sickness Relief: Cyclizine

I’m not saying I’m a pill popper, but before I got pregnant If i had a headache I’d take a tablet. Ditto with a bit of a sore throat, niggly back, you get the picture.

Not only have I gone cold turkey with smoking, I’ve also done the same with any kind of medication, including pain killers.

It’s been fine, until now. In the midst’s of sever morning sickness I’ve realised that I’m not coping anymore and I may need a little help to get me back on my feet, so when my GP suggested I try an anti sickness drug called Cyclizine, I reluctantly agreed.

I took my prescription home and despite being assured by my GP that it was one of the safest (and mildest) anti sickness drugs to use in pregnancy, I wanted to do my own research.

According to Google, it seems that lots of women take Cyclizine and have no problems, though it doesn’t appear to work for everyone all the time.

I spoke to my hubby and we agreed that as I was 11 weeks now (and was told by the GP that taking this medication after 8 weeks is even safer) that I would give it a go. I had to, I was a mess.

I only had 2 tablets a day, 12 hours apart, and while I still felt nauseaus, I stopped being sick so often, which was a blessed relief.

I was told to take them whenever I felt I needed them, so that’s what I did and personally I’m really glad I chose to take them as I feel they helped me get back on my feet a little.

Obviously, the decision as to whether to take medication in pregnancy is entirely down to the individual, and If I wasn’t so unwell I’d have liked to have been able to steer clear, alas, I did what was right for me at the time.

Have any of you suffered terribly with morning sickness? How did you cope? What are your thoughts on taking medication during pregnancy?

Week 10: Midwife Booking In Appointment

So, I managed going to back to work for all of 1 hour this week. On Tuesday, the day of my 1st midwife booking in appointment, which I had been so looking forward to.

I dragged myself to work and after an extremely dodgy journey, I finally made it in just in time to throw up my breakfast and collapse at my desk in tears.

My work colleagues took pity on me and sent me home with the instructions to get a note signing me off this week. I felt wretched as I called my GP for an appointment 2 hours later.

But that was just the beginning of the worst day in my pregnancy to date so far.

I have no idea how, but I managed to get myself on the tube and onto a train home, but by this point my underwired bra felt like it was digging into me, and my sickly tummy couldn't stand the pressure, so there I was, on the 10:20am train home, flapping about on a train, desperately trying to take my bra off, while panting through the sickness and sipping lukewarm water.

I’m pretty sure moans of desperation and ickyness may have left my mouth on that 25 minute journey, the longest journey of my life.

Once home my hubby who was working from home that day ahead of our midwife appointment, put me to bed to rest ahead of my GP appointment.

Things didn't get any better there.

Sat in a stinking hot waiting room with no air or water to hand I was rocking through the sickness at the clinic and eventually succumbed to my need to throw up right as I was being called in for my appointment.

This was not a hi-light of my day. Neither was tearfully accepting my GP’s prescription for an anti sickness drug called Cyclizine, which will feature more in my next post.

This is what you book of 'notes' looks like- Keep it close!

Despite my semi-consciousness, we did make it to the hospital for my midwife appointment, though I could tell you very little about what happened as I spent the majority of my time in the loo!

She took a sample of my urine, weighed me and took my blood pressure. She went through (thoroughly) what felt like THOUSANDS of pages of notes about mine and my husband’s medical history while I sat there nodding along, semi comatosed.

There are a LOT of forms that you have to fill in and they want so much detail too! I guess it’s good, better to be armed with plenty of info than not enough, and I was told that I’d need to carry these notes with me at all times, as in the event that anything happens to me or the baby, everything any nurse/doctor would need to know is written there. So keep your notes close by ladies!

I got given one of these too, which was mainly filled with adverts for baby Paraphernalia
and small samples of various things such as coffee (random) but it is a great, waterproof place to slip my hospital notes into to stop them getting grimey when I carry them around with me for the next 30 weeks!

I made it home from the appointment in one piece, not before having to barge the hubby out of the way when he opened the door to race for the loo before it was game over again.

Did I mention it was also one of the hottest bleeding days of the year so far this day?

This was not my favourite day by a LONG shot.
